Now that the holiday rush is upon us, we’re in the midst of a self-paced holiday season, where you can expect to work with a lot of stress and pressure. And while the holiday season can be fun, the stress is high. With a growing body of research showing the link between stress and ill health, the pressures of the holiday season have real financial implications too.
So how much money do you make as a phlebotomist for your own company? In a recent survey of more than 3,000 phlebotomists, it was revealed that the median annual salary was $58,000. The median number of hours worked per week? Over 60 – which means that most of us can probably fit in a long weekend here and there.
This is a pretty good income, but if you do it all or most of the time, it can feel a little too much. I think we can all agree that a decent salary is a good thing, but you go too far and you can feel like you’re working more than your body is.
One of the more interesting parts of the survey was one of the questions about how much of the $100k salary for phlebotomists was due to work time. Most of us will agree that there are often other reasons for it, like travel expenses, or the cost of living in the US compared to Europe. This question asks whether it was due to work time or vacation, and I think that the answer is pretty clear.
The majority of us work at least part-time, and some of us even work full-time. This was a big part of why I was so interested in the survey — it was a way to get a clear picture of what most of our day to day lives are like. Also, it’s always nice to know that you’re not on some insane salary scheme just waiting for someone to pay you.
It might be worth noting that this is the same salary we pay the people who build the machines that take blood samples.
This is not in any way an official salary guide, just an attempt to put a little transparency into what it feels like to work at ekg. As for the salary, the ekg staff is extremely talented. It’s only recently that we have been able to employ people who are truly skilled in the field, and that includes the people at ekg. The reason for this is simple. ekg is a company of people, not robots. Robots are great for making money, but they do not have the emotional maturity necessary to build a company from the ground up.
But then we have to pay people for who they are, and that means that the employees at ekg do have to spend time and effort on themselves. That’s where the ekg staff comes into play. Many of the staff have degrees in medicine and chemistry, but the majority of the people working at ekg are not doctors or chemists. They are engineers with a science background and are able to go all the way to the top of the ekg stack.
This is important to understand because this is the first thing that many people will say to you when you ask them if you should get a Ph.D. in engineering.
